How Important is Pedestrian Safety on Modesto Roads?

It was early morning on December 18th, 2017, when a 77-year-old from Ceres was forced to swerve his 1997 Dodge while driving down Hatch Road. He was trying to avoid a man who appeared to be walking in his lane. Despite the evasive maneuver, the driver was unable to avoid the pedestrian, and he wa hit with the right-side bumper of the vehicle. It is a devastating loss for both parties involved. But is there anything that we could do to prevent an accident like this? Are there ways to po protect yourself and your family?

How to Increase Pedestrian Safety in Modesto?

The pedestrian was rushed to Doctors Medical Center after the accident, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. This tragedy has led to an investigation by the California Highway Patrol, who are still trying to discern what exactly went wrong in this situation. However, while we wait to learn the details of this crash there are things we can do to increase our own safety on public roads as pedestrians. Here are a few tips

  • Be sure to follow the traffic rules and obey signals and signs.

  • Never assume a driver will give you the right of way, and try to anticipate what a driver will do as they approach you.

  • Do not consume alcohol as it can impair you reflexes and decision-making abilities.

  • Do not let headphones, smartphone screens or other distractions keep you from staying safe while walking.

  • Try to use the sidewalks and crosswalks whenever they are available.

  • If no sidewalk is available, walk on the far side of the road facing traffic, so you can see any cars coming toward you.

  • If you need to cross somewhere and there is no crosswalk available, make sure the area is well lit and wait until a suitable gap in traffic presents itself.

  • Do not try to rush across the street!

Drivers need to be even more careful than pedestrians. They are behind the wheel of a large and potentially dangerous machine, so alcohol consumption, distracted driving or other dangerous behaviors like speeding could lead to disaster. If a driver does cause a pedestrian accident, then they may also be held responsible for the damages caused. This includes property damage and medical bill reimbursement, compensating the loved ones left behind by a crash.
